1347 was a dark year in European medieval history. The Black Death reached Europe in October, brought by Genoese ships landing in Sicily. Elsewhere, Calais fell to Edward III of England, securing a major foothold on the French coast. On the 11th of October, Louis IV of the Holy Roman Empire, also known as "Louis the Bavarian," died from a stroke during a hunting expedition. Meanwhile, in Southern India, the Bahmani Sultanate was founded, and its sultan, Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah, was crowned as ruler.
