The year 1925 was relatively peaceful, in terms of active conflict, in Europe. The Locarno Pact was officially signed in London in December of this year. Also known as the Locarno Treaties, this was a negotiation between the countries of Britain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and France which offered guarantees of western European borders and was designed to improve the political climate at the time. In Asia however, things were different; in July 1925 Syria had an uprising against the French colonial powers, known as the Great Syrian Revolt. This violent uprising would last for 2 years and reach a death toll of over 4,000 people. Further east, in China, police fired on Chinese protestors in Shanghai, triggering a wave of nationwide strikes, boycotts, and demonstrations known as the May Thirtieth Movement.
